A natural disaster can occur this very moment and you may not even know about it. If you are interested in natural hazards from around the world, Earth Alerts will keep you up to date. While running, it will notify you of any earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano activity, tropical storms and other extreme weather conditions. It monitors these conditions almost in real time, using numerous online sources, like the National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey and others.

Earth Alerts is freeware and you can have it up and running in less than a minute. The setup file is less than 3 Mb large and installing the software can be done in a few seconds. There is no need to make any advanced configurations, regarding your Internet connection, or install additional services.

The application provides a global overview of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and tropical storms. You can access these categories by clicking a series of hyperlinks, on the left side of the interface. Each category will display various details on the larger area of the window. For example, if you select the earthquakes category, you will see a map of the world, with color coded markers, which show the earthquakes from the last week, day or hour, as well as their magnitudes.

Other categories will display smaller maps, as well as detailed reports and images from the affected places. There is also a United States overview, which shows severe weather reports, volcanoes, wild fires and landslides, in a similar fashion. It is also possible to add new locations, on the software's main settings menu. You will have to specify the name of your city, country and other details.

You will find many hyperlinks on the interface, which you can use to perform Google searches for the latest news about a selected hazards category, to access satellite imagery or launch various web pages, on your default browser, where you will find additional information, webcam feeds and more.

The software can update on demand or you can activate an automatic update feature. If a natural phenomenon occurs, a notification window will appear in the lower right corner of the screen, with hyperlinks that will display detailed information on the interface. You can also view the most significant alerts by clicking a small icon, in the upper left corner of the main window.

Pros

Earth Alerts can update itself automatically, providing you with the latest information about natural hazards. It covers a wide range of phenomena, and it displays detailed reports, location maps and much more. The software offers a very broad range of information and using it is not difficult.

Cons

The software has one design flaw. When you hover with your mouse cursor over the system tray icon, a small notification window pops up, which is very uncomfortable because it prevents you from clicking the icon. Earth Alerts will keep you informed about natural hazards or severe weather at all times. You only need to let it run in the background and you will be kept up to date with what is happening around the world.
